VLC is a free and open source cross-platform multimedia player and framework that plays most multimedia files as well as DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. VLC is free, but the non-profit VideoLAN gratefully accepts a small donation to help them maintain and develop the program.

For information on installing the VLC media player, visit the VLC webpage and follow the link to the version for your platform. Some vendors (e.g. Apple and Microsoft) make the VLC media player available from their online store. This is the simplest way to install the program on those platforms.

Notes
1. The Files app on iOS and iPadOS and Finder on MacOS can play individual MP3 audiobook files. You can simply play each file in the “Audiobook” folder in turn. It is possible to create a custom Shortcut that plays all files in the “Audiobook” folder sequentially.
2. The Music app on iOS and iPadOS cannot directly open or play the MP3 audiobook files. Instead, it is necessary to import them into Music on MacOS, and then use Finder to synchronize the audiobook media from MacOS Music to the iOS or iPadOS device, where they can be played by Music on that device.
3. The Music app on MacOS provides additional functionality to create an album from the audiobook files with additional metadata such as author, album name, and a cover image. This provides a convenient way to display the audiobook as an album in your library along with other Apple Music titles.
