Submitting a Proposal to the ICG Press
If you have an idea for a book related to costumes or costuming or a manuscript that is ready for publication, contact the Editor in Chief at icgpress-editor@costume.org. Here is some information about making a proposal for a new book.
Whether your book is an idea that you would like to pursue or a completed manuscript, the first step is to submit a proposal. Your proposal should include a description of the completed book, an outline, and a short sample. The description provides information about the subject of the book, its intended audience, short bios of the authors and their relevant experience, whether you have a completed manuscript and if so the approximate length of the book, the number of illustrations, and the document format.
If the book is still in the idea stage, create an outline that will give us an idea of its content and write three to five pages that are representative of the book’s content. We understand that things will change as you write, but this will aid us in evaluating your proposal. If you have a completed or nearly-completed manuscript, include a detailed table of contents and a three to five page excerpt that will give us an idea of the book’s content. Do not send the compete manuscript at this time. Your submission should be sent to the Editor in Chief by email, with separate attachments for the description, the outline, and the sample pages. We prefer PDF format for these documents.
The ICG Press Editor in Chief will review your submission to ensure it meets the general guidelines for books published by the Press, then pass it on to a Selection Committee who will evaluate the proposal on its merits. If the Committee’s recommendation is positive, the Editor in Chief will make a determination about moving forward.
At that point, if your book is in the idea stage, the Editor in Chief or another editor will stay in contact with you as you complete your book, and can answer any questions you may have. If you have a completed manuscript, the Editor in Chief will ask you to send it, and the Selection Committee will evaluate it in detail. If the Committee makes a positive recommendation on the competed manuscript, the Editor in Chief will make a final decision about publication and notify you.
If the decision is to move forward, an editor will be assigned who will work with you and see the manuscript through the publication process.
