I've
done a first pass through the survey data, and want to bring to chapter rep's
attention that in the communications questions, there is a nearly 2:1
preference for a email/webforum
model (similar to yahoogroups) over Slack (which was
the second-preferred option.) This really matches my general experience
in conducting business online with non-profits comprising mixed-generation and
mixed-connectivity communities.
I urge you to consider this feedback when voting on the "switch entirely
to Slack" motion.

The graphics on the data parse (verified members versus unverified) will be
uploaded shortly. Sorry it has taken so long, but there is a huge
amount of data to process and I’m doing it manually in Excel. Out of
64 verified responses, however, here are the numbers:
Preferred
method of communication:
Paper Mail/Newsletter - 2
Email through Email list - 27
Direct Email (no list) - 7
Slack - 10
Facebook Group - 9
Facebook Page - 5
Other - 4And for official communications:
Slack - 14
Facebook Group - 15
Email List like YahooGroups - 31
Other - 4

While Kevin’s analysis of the overall picture of Slack versus Email is correct
based on only that data, I think there’s something else that may need to be
considered.
This
shows that our members are interacting across multiple platforms, so a single
platform is not going to work to get information out to everyone. By
choosing a single platform, we limit what members access by limiting all
communications to a specific platform. Perhaps the conversation
should be how do we get information to all of our members on these platforms
and what platform is best suited for official
communications. Personal opinion, but I think this data shows that
there is a lot that hasn’t been considered.

While
that's true, what Kevin is pointing out is that the survey results do not align
with the poll results that will soon finish. Currently the voting stands
at 8 votes for switching all official communication to slack and 7 against. So
the question reps should consider while there is time left: are you
representing your chapters opinions or your own with your vote?

It’s worth noting also that with only 75 responses, it’s very likely that most
chapters had no one respond. That would mean that those reps likely
know their chapters better than they are represented in the
survey. Additionally, the comments on the survey show that it is the
opinion of some members that their chapter presidents do not consider all
members opinions when they vote, so I would urge everyone to check with their
chapter members before voting on any issue for their chapter, as Judy
indicated.
The
verified responses workbook is almost complete and will be uploaded shortly.

I
can't speak for the parent organization, but my chapter is looking at seven
different platforms at this time and I believe when the dust settles in the
next few days, we will have one main platform and at least four additional
points of contact, not including our website and newsletter.
So
far, of the few people who reponded to our chapter
survey, something that sends reliable and passive email will be part of this
overall communication package.
Folks
from the BOD are welcome to see the conversation in action in our SiW Communications Group on Slack.

The
verified members' responses to the 2019 survey are now in
the #2019survey channel. There is good data in the commentary (2nd
worksheet, after the graphs and visuals) regarding other alternatives to
consider for communications as well @Betsy R.
Marks and @kevin.p.roche that you may want to look at as well.
